Planning and pulling off a destination wedding takes serious organization, attention to detail, and efficiency. There are a ton of moving parts to consider, so nailing down the logistics is key. How I Prep for a Destination Wedding

1. Customizing Equipment for Every Event

Every wedding has its own vibe, and so does my equipment. My main camera setup is my ride-or-die, but I mix it up based on the events and moments I’m shooting. Sometimes that means adding a film camera for that timeless, vintage feel, packing extra details for flat lay photos, or bringing additional flash setups for difficult, low-light situations. Tailoring my gear means I’m prepared to tackle any challenge that comes my way, all while delivering the high-quality results my clients expect.

2. Travel Hacks for Protecting Precious Gear

Traveling with expensive camera gear? It’s a mission. I always keep my must-have equipment in my carry-on to dodge any luggage drama. Plus, my bags have tracking tags because losing your gear is a no-go! This way, my equipment stays safe, and I can relax knowing I can always track it down.

3. Early Arrival and Venue Scouting

Venue scouting is a must for destination weddings! I make it a point to arrive at least 2-3 days early. This buffer time helps me handle any travel hiccups and fully scope out the venue. I wander around to find the best photo spots, check out the lighting, and plan out my shots. This way, I’m totally prepped to capture the best angles and backdrops come the big day.

4. Balancing Light Packing with Being Prepared

Packing for a destination wedding is all about balance. I pack light to keep my gear safe and travel smooth, but I also bring backups for any gear fails or crazy weather. Extra batteries, memory cards, and sometimes even a third camera body. This way, no matter what, I’m ready to shoot without interruptions.

5. Smooth Communication with Couples and Vendors

Clear communication is absolutely essential when traveling for a wedding. Before I leave, I establish a solid plan with the couple and vendors. Everyone stays in the loop with my travel details and arrival times, ensuring a stress-free and smoothly coordinated experience. Once I’m there, I check in with everyone to confirm the final plans.

6. Embracing the New Location

One of the best parts of destination weddings is exploring new places! When I arrive, I love to wander around with my camera, soaking in the scenery and taking some early shots. It helps me get a feel for why the couple picked this location, and romanticize the place that is meaningful to them.
